Pilates was designed by Joseph H. Pilates, a gymnast born in Germany of Greek ancestry
Pilates called his method Contrology, because he believed his method uses the mind to control the muscles. The program focuses on the core postural muscles which help keep the body balanced and which are essential to providing support for the spine. In particular, Pilates exercises include specific breathing pattern and accurate movements in order to simultaneously stretch and strengthen muscles, balance muscular activity, improve posture, endurance and coordination, plus increase oxygenation.
Regular exercising with the Pilates method leads to a better balanced musculature, increased harmony of movement and body awareness.
Mat exercises work the entire body without major resistance and are the basis of the Pilates methodology.
The Reformer is the main piece of Pilates equipment that offers us nearly 200 exercises carried out in various positions (standing, seated or lying). Due to the fact that it uses springs for resistance we can work the muscles smoothly, without brisk movements, thus avoiding adding unnecessary bulk and overstraining the joints.
The Cadillac - the first machine invented by Joseph H. Pilates - with another 200 exercises adds a similar variety to our workout as the Reformer. Meanwhile the Stability Chairs offers an opportunity of overall workout to people for whom lying postures are inadequate.
Thanks to the unique build of the Pilates equipment exercises can be modified to all needs from post-rehab clients to professional athletes. By not putting strain on the joints and muscles that are out of the focus of the exercise, workouts can be of a great help when rehabilitating after injuries and surgery. At the same time right modifications can offer a challenge to clients with different level of endurance.
